At Pro-Masters Auto Collision & Hail Center, it’s important to us that you thoroughly understand the repair process before you commit to spending a dime. We’re always more than happy to answer any questions about our repair processes and the terminology that we use. Here’s a quick look at some common auto body repair vocabulary terms.
Corrosion
Corrosion is what happens when refined metals convert to carbonite, oxide, hydroxide, or sulfide. In the auto body repair industry, the relevant form of corrosion is rust. If rust has become present on your car, you’ll want to promptly take care of it. If you delay, then the rust will have the chance to further spread and become a more expensive issue to address.
LKQ
These letters are short for Like Kind & Quality, which refers to high-quality parts that have been taken from vehicles that are no longer operating. These parts have been examined by a professional and are deemed safe for use during auto body repairs.
Masking
This refers to covering areas of the vehicle that are not supposed to be painted.
OEM Parts
OEM stands for original equipment manufacturer. These parts are exactly like the ones that originally came from the manufacturer, and are made with the same specifications and materials. OEM parts are a great option for replacing damaged vehicle components.
Putty
Putty, which is a polyester product, is often used for treating minor auto body damage. Putty can be helpful with smoothening damaged areas on the car’s surface. When putty is used, primer and finish paint are then needed to complete the repair process.
Unibody
This refers to the structural support in most modern vehicles, in which the vehicle’s body also serves as the frame.
