Are you restoring a classic car? Follow these 3 tips for protecting its paint job

Whether you’re restoring a classic car as a long-term passion project or as an investment with the hopes to turn a profit, you’ll want to keep its paint job in excellent condition. By taking some basic measures, you can help to keep your classic car’s paint job looking beautiful. And if you need any help with your classic car restoration project, our crew at Pro-Masters Auto Collision & Hail Center would be happy to assist. Here are three basic tips for keeping your classic car’s paint job looking great.
Wash Weekly
Classic cars should be washed each week to help ensure that debris doesn’t degrade the paint job. Such vehicles should be hand-washed with non-abrasive washing mitts and automotive-specific soap. By washing from top to bottom, you’ll avoid spreading grime/pollutants in your car’s lower area up toward the top of the car. Because wheels are generally dirtiest, they should be washed last. It’s also smart to wash your classic car in a shaded location so that the direct sun doesn’t cause the soap to rapidly evaporate and leave streaks. The car should then be hand-dried with non-abrasive towels, which help to prevent minerals from the water from remaining on your paint. Proper drying will also reduce the risk of rust.
Regular Waxing
If you regularly drive your restored vehicle, then it’ll be best to wax it every 6 to 8 weeks. This way, you’ll have added protection against UV rays and environmental contaminants. Waxing should be done in the shade.
Prioritize Space in Your Garage for Your Classic Car
By making space in your garage for your classic car, you’ll have much better protection against paint damage from UV rays, bird droppings (which can quickly cause damage due to high acidity), vandals, and hail storms.
